Hello! I am a Hitchin based family photographer and I use natural light and the outdoors to capture authentic moments for families.  I like photographing families in a relaxed and informal way which involves minimal direction, using a documentary style to capture the story being told.

My aim is for the session to be fun, and to present a gallery of images that represents YOUR own unique family. My editorial style is both vibrant and personal - mixing a pop of colour (lovely for natural portraits) with timeless black and white (enhancing the more soulful and intimate moments).

Located in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, I have a number of suggestions for scenic beauty spots in the surrounding area. Alternatively I can travel to you and shoot in a location that has special meaning to you and your family. This might mean beginning in your home and then venturing to the local park.

If you have a dog that is willing and able to join us, then this can be a brilliant way of keeping everyone relaxed and engaged whilst capturing your family in it’s entirety - just be sure to walk them first and bring plenty of treats! I also offer a natural light studio space that is perfect for family or dog portraits.

If your family enjoys being outside in nature and does not like the formality of posed photography, then click here to sign up to this experience.

Props can help tell the story - any favourite teddy bears, scooters, musical instruments or other treasured items will all help to create personalised images that will capture this moment in time. If your child is a bookworm (like mine) then bring along that book!

Choice of clothing can help to give vibrancy and cohesion to the final image. It is a good idea to reflect the colours of the season in clothing for the shoot - a mustard yellow coat in Autumn (for example) will always look fantastic. On the other hand I feel it is important for your clothes to reflect who you are and for your children to be happy wearing them! I am happy to discuss ideas or you can check out my pintrest board.

I approach my work in a mindful and sensitive way, giving some direction for group shots as well as allowing moments of connection to unfold. This is the best way I know of capturing what is truly authentic, and I try to make people feel relaxed and at ease. I welcome muddy knees in my photography - the only thing you need to do is be yourself.

My goal is for your photography session to be enjoyable. If a child is hungry, we stop and have a snack. If I need to put my camera down and engage children with a quick game of hide and seek, then that is what I will do. Where possible I like to stand back and quietly capture the action - it is my absolute joy to photograph your family in this way.

"We met with Catherine to have a family photo shoot for my son’s 1st birthday. Catherine was very professional and had already planned good locations nearby, at a time to capture the ‘golden hour’. She made us feel so relaxed and was great at making my son laugh, resulting in beautiful photographs. She is incredibly skilled and is very good at editing too. Thank you so much Catherine, we will treasure your photographs forever."

Alice B.W, Olney

"I can't recommend Catherine highly enough. The children had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We were astounded by the quality of the photographs and had so many wonderful shots to choose from."

Susan R, Welwyn

"The children were immediately at ease with Catherine, she has a lovely way with them and used a number of games and ideas to keep them entertained and engaged throughout the shoot. They loved the location and, for them, it was just another play opportunity that could be captured on film! Catherine used the natural resources available for some great photos that we will always treasure. Highly recommended."

Claire S, Letchworth

"I’ll be honest, I hate having my photo taken but really wanted some special pictures with the kids and the experience with Catherine was brilliant. She was really relaxed, was extremely understanding of the concentration levels of kids and after ten minutes I forgot she had the camera! Catherine really captured the essence of my kids and the photos are beautiful; I will definitely repeat the experience in a few years!"

Ros B, Hitchin

"We recently had a family photo shoot, Catherine picked a beautiful autumnal location and managed to get some great natural photos of the girls at golden hour. The children immediately felt at ease laughing and playing about in the leaves whilst Catherine captured some great shots. Thanks again for an enjoyable photo shoot."

Tasha S, Hitchin
