‘A Day in the Life’ – family photoshoot
A longer family photoshoot can be preferable for smaller children or families with animals – and can include a mix of your own home & garden alongside a local beauty spot or park. This unrushed 3 hr session allows your family to be documented in a truly authentic way whilst engaging in a range of activities.
From this session a wide selection of aproximately 35 images will be available from your online gallery.
Things to know before
- Eat a good breakfast
- Cloudy skies create flattering light
- Avoid sequins, logos and busy patterns
- Children always have the best ideas
- Relax and go with the flow
When inside a clients home I begin by seeking out rooms with soft light (where the sun is not streaming in). These are often not the most obvious rooms (bathrooms for example can be great) and I might need to move items of furniture to access the best available light source. On a very dull and cloudy day I might use my reflector to enhance the natural window light or bounce flash off the ceiling so as to replicate and enhance the natural light coming in.
My goal is always to get a good mixture of relaxed group shots, close up portraits and playful, candid interaction between family members. For an outdoor session, timing your session towards either sunrise or sunset gives more freedom of movement (as top shade is not as critical) and is ideal in terms of capturing beautiful light. When the sun is high I will always look for shade to avoid unflattering shadows (cloudy days are a photographers friend). Trees, doorways and umbrellas are some great ways to find shade and enhance the lighting conditions so as to produce the best quality end result.
HOW FAR DO YOU TRAVEL?
Within 15 miles of Hitchin for the prices as listed. Beach shoots are located in Norfolk. Group and one to one beginners photography training sessions all take place at my home studio in Hitchin.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR ON THE SHOOT?
It is important to be comfortable and warm, and for children a spare pair of clothes is always a good idea. Avoid bold patterns, logo’s and stripes – which can all be distracting. Think about the season and the colours that you can see around you – try to reflect those colours in the clothes you wear. Take a look at my pintrest board for inspiration to complement the seasons. I will offer further advice around clothing during out initial consultation – which is covered in the booking fee.
DOES BAD WEATHER AFFECT THE SHOOT?
Unless it is torrential rain your photoshoot won’t be cancelled. Shots of children holding umbrellas and jumping in puddles are lots of fun – and I will find ways to make the most of the weather conditions. Bright sunny days are the least ideal from a photography point of view – so clouds are a bonus! Even on an overcast day, top shade is preferable to prevent unflattering shadows on faces. Shade can be found under trees and other areas of cover such as doorways and umbrellas. Ideal light conditions are found just after sunrise and before sunset. Family photography sessions that take place around these times are always the most atmospheric in terms of capturing beautiful light.
CAN I RESCHEDULE THE SHOOT DUE TO ILLNESS?
The booking fee is non refundable however as a mother of young children I understand that illness can strike – and often does – at the most inopportune of times. I will be most sympathetic to this and we can rearrange your shoot at no additional cost to you.
WILL YOU ASK FOR MY PERMISSION TO USE IMAGES TAKEN ON SOCIAL MEDIA?
I will always ask your permission to use any of the photographs from your shoot for my website or social media. You have every right to deny me that permission and are under no obligation to allow me to use them. Immediately after your photography session I will offer a ‘sneak peak’ on my social media pages that you are welcome to share with friends and family if you so wish.
